Things I Won’t Miss

Pollen.

Today’s pollen count is 8150, obliterating the previous record of 6000. I can barely breathe, only slept about one hour last night and could not go in to teach today.

Yeah, I won’t miss this part of living in Georgia.

  1. Mike says:

That almost sounds fake. Public congrats on the new gig for many reasons (aside from lower pollen counts!).

Just had a thought while reading some papers about the corporate control of hip-hop and your argument about music theatre a few posts below. Could Baudrillard’s simulacra theory be applied in these cases? The new stuff is a simulation of the old, but is interpreted as “the real thing?”

I’ve been thinking about ways to frame the situation in hip-hop; seems to me that country music suffers a similar problem.

    Any thoughts?

  2. You know, I think you may be onto something there. What is authenticity? Does the industry privilege the simulacrum over the real? Here in what is arguably one of the nerve centers of hip-hop, there does seem to be the mindset that you’re not a real rapper until you’ve done some kind of time – witness T.I. going to federal prison (that was all over the local news here).

  3. Oh, and today’s pollen count: 9369.

Feeling better today, but that’s just because I’m all hopped up on goofballs. I sat down at the piano in Form and Analysis to discuss the third movement of Haydn, Hob. XVI:37, and the notes were moving.
